The Economy

Well, the economy has hit everyone pretty hard, especially college grads like me. The word going around is that most college grads haven’t gotten a job yet. At all. Now there have been some who’ve been lucky. I know someone who got a job with NPR right out of college. I also know someone who had been working at Rita’s since high school and is now a manager there. Other than that all the other grads I know do not have a job. This includes several people who I know are very talented.

It just seems like a waste of cash to pay for all four years of college to come out and find that no one is hiring. The skills built in in college mean nothing next to the experience several people, who have been laid off and now in the job market themselves, already have. Especially when you consider the fact that a lot of grads I know are looking for retail work. That’s not what we went to college for.

Sure, Grad School is an option. The problem is that Grad school has always been an expensive option, not even considering the economy. However, I do know a few people who have taken this option. For the rest of us we are looking for the money to pay the bills, and pay off our student loans.

My mother pointed out a while ago that with so many college grads still looking for work, banks may be facing a second crisis. If college grads don’t have jobs, they can’t pay back the loans. If a good enough portion of college grads cannot pay back the loans, the banks could possibly lose a lot of money.

Despite all this, it is worth pointing out that there is a silver lining in this cloud. College grads still have another 4 months before the loans need to be paid back. The job market should open up again between August and September when College students go back to school.

It certainly doesn’t help matters that Obama decided to increase the interest on student loans. I’m wondering how that’s going to help when the people paying those loans may not have a job to get the money to pay the loans in the first place! With the economy the way it is right now it was going to be hard enough for college grads to pay the loans and interest without Obama pulling this trick on us.

For the High School Students thinking about college, here’s a better idea. Go to a trade school. There are many openings in the various trades because people my age thought it would be a better idea to go to college and not get into a trade. High School students can take advantage of this and get themselves a decent job unlike college students, who are scared of the future.

Fellow college grads, keep looking and keep trying! There are still jobs out there for us, and while it may be something lower than what we wanted it is something to pay the bills. Good luck!
